New vehicle sales surge 28pc

GEARING FORWARD: Better sales due to longer working month, strong consumer sentiment, says MAA

NEW vehicle sales jumped 28 per cent, or 12,646 units, month-on-month in March to 57,622 units, according to the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) data.

This helped the total industry volume (TIV) grow by 14 per cent to 157,664 vehicles in the first three months, from 138,544 in the January-March period last year.

MAA said the higher March sales were due to the longer working month compared to February and strong consumer sentiment.

There were also many model launches that whetted the appetite of car buyers in Malaysia.

The TIV for April, however, is expected to be slightly lower due to the uncertainty in the market on expectation and promises of car price reduction.

Passenger cars remain kings of the road both in terms of sales and production in March.

Their sales increased month-on-month by more than 3,000 units to 50,562 units, from 47,106 units in the same month last year.

Commercial vehicles only made up 7,060 units out of the 57,622 total sales, up from 6,477 units in March last year.

Year-to-date passenger car sales rose to 139,689 units from 122,837 units in the previous year.

In terms of production, MAA said passenger vehicles made the bulk of the segment at 44,380 units, compared with only 4,654 units of commercial vehicles - out of total 49,034 units produced in March.

Between January and March, total production stood at 146,051, up from 141,959 in the corresponding period last year.
