Malaysia's new car sales up 2pc in first half
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's new car sales reached 303,100 units in the first half of this year, up almost two per cent from 297,200 units sold in the same period last year.

Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua) managing director Datuk Aminar Rashid Salleh estimates the total industry volume to hit between 612,000 units to 615,000 units this year.

The Malaysian Automotive Association had forecast car sales of 615,000 units this year over the 599,877 units recorded last year.

At a briefing on its first-half performance, Perodua revealed that it had sold more cars than any other carmaker up to June this year.

Perodua sold 92,900 cars in the first two quarters of this year compared with Proton (72,800 units), Toyota (51,600 units), Honda (11,100 units) and Nissan (16,600 units).

Aminar said with the improved sales, Perodua holds a 30.7 per cent market share in the industry.

In the same period last year, Proton was the market leader when it sold 85,200 units compared to Perodua's 79,500 units.

In the passenger car segment, Perodua MyVi knocked off Proton's Saga model and now leads the industry volume with 44,600 units sold in the first six months of this year.

During the same period, Proton sold 33,500 units of the Saga model followed by Perodua's Viva (28,200), Proton's Persona (17,100) and Toyota's Vios (16,700).

In the multi-purpose vehicle segment, Perodua is the market leader, thanks to its Alza model that sold 20,100 units up to June this year, followed by Proton's Exora model with 12,800 units.
