'Malaysian firms have progressed'
KUALA LUMPUR: Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said Malaysian companies have progressed over the years, making a name for themselves and are now able to expand their operations overseas.
He said many local companies are also known to be owning international companies such as Battersea Power Station, the coal-fired power station in the UK; British textile design company Laura Ashley; and premium toiletries brand Crabtree & Evelyn.
Malaysian companies are also able to build and manage highways, ports and airports, he said.
"In those days, it was impossible to think that Malaysian companies going abroad. We knew only of international companies coming here.
"Things do grow in Malaysia. This is a very fertile country and over time there were new companies being formed and these companies begin to grow," he said, in a speech at Malaysian Business' 40th anniversary event, here yesterday.
