Islamic economic forum to discuss changing trends
KUALA LUMPUR: Over 1,500 delegates from 62 countries and over 70 international speakers are expected at the 8th World Islamic Economic Forum (8th WIEF) to be held next week in Johor Baru.
Themed "Changing Trends, New Opportunities", the delegates will engage in talks about topical issues affecting global and local communities.
The three-day event, which begins on December 4, will be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak who is also the patron of WIEF Foundation.
Attending leaders would include Comoros president Dr Ikililou Dhoinine, Qatar prime minister Sheikh Hamad Jassim Jaber Al Thani and Singapore Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam.
Other invited guests include Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, Islamic Development Bank president Dr Ahmad Mohamed Ali and Moro Islamic Liberation Front chairman Al Haj Murad Ebrahim.
In a media briefing here yesterday, WIEF Foundation chairman Tun Musa Hitam said the event would mark Johor's first global forum of such which allows it to showcase Iskandar Malaysia, a fast-growing economic region in Asia.
The forum will provide opportunities for investors and business leaders to explore Iskandar Malaysia's potential.
"This is part of WIEF Foundation's aim to build bridges through business. In fact, 15 partnerships have been forged over the last three forums which included an MOU between Coca-Cola and WIEF Foundation to boost socio-economic development within the Muslim world," said Musa.
During the 8th WIEF, he said, more than five memorandum of understandings and agreements will be signed on the first day of the event, to be witnessed by the Prime Minister.
The MOUs and agreements will be between companies and also between governments, he said.
The forum is sponsored by Khazanah Nasional, UEM Bhd and Iskandar Development Bhd.
The gala dinner, to be held on December 4, will be hosted by Najib and graced by the presence of Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar and his consort Raja Zarith Sofiah.
