Vehicle infotainment systems to be worth RM44b

PETALING JAYA: Intelligent products with innovative software solutions for the global “connected car” market that is projected to be worth US$14.4bil (RM44.15bil) by 2016 provides vast opportunities for Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) status companies, said Collaborative Research in Engineering, Science and Technology Centre (Crest).

Crest chief executive officer Jaffri Ibrahim said the in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) systems would be worth US$14.4bil by 2016 with a compound annual growth rate of 16% between 2011 and 2016.

“What we have here is a huge opportunity for Malaysian companies in the information and communication technology (ICT) line to get into the market starting from the IVI platform,” he said after the opening ceremony of the Global Connected Car Solutions Symposium where MSC status companies were invited to explore the opportunities in developing the next generation of IVI systems and embedded technology solutions.

Clarion (M) Sdn Bhd managing director TK Tan said the whole transformation is from a mechanically-driven device to a software-connected device.

The latest IVI products are able to provide navigation, vehicle telematics, telecommunications and internet connectivity functions to consumers so that they stay connected, entertained and informed on the road.

“Transformation (of technologies) is market driven, not product driven. As more and more people get involved in the connected' lifestyle, it will proliferate through the whole system,” said Tan.

Malaysian Investment Development Authority chief executive officer Datuk Noharuddin Nordin said the smart devices segment had enjoyed robust growth on the backdrop of the current economy.

“For every slowdown, there will be a recovery. The question is, who is prepared to take advantage of the recovery,” he said. Commending Clarion Malaysia's achievement in creating the Clarion Mirage, an Android-driven IVI unit, he said: “This proves that a Malaysian-based company can visualise, co-develop (with global technology partners), create and manufacture a truly innovative IVI product that captures the attention of the world.”
