More opportunities in UAE for Malaysian tea and coffee exporters

KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 26): Matrade, Malaysia’s external trade promotion arm, said the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has huge potential for Malaysian tea and coffee exporters in venturing into the West Asian region, as the region was the world’s top re-exporter of tea and fifth re-exporter of coffee.

UAE exporters are exploring new markets to maintain the country’s prominent standing in the tea trade and Malaysian exporters should take this opportunity to increase their exports,” said Matrade in a statement Wednesday.

According to Matrade, the UAE represented 60% of the tea re-export market with a share that was valued at US$48 million in 2011.

Sri Lanka was the top supplier of tea to the UAE, amounting to almost 20% of the total UAE’s import, followed by India at 8%.

"The UAE was the world’s second largest tea importer behind Russia for the past four years, with imports having risen from US$324 million in 2007 to US$485 million in 2011,” said Matrade.

Correspondingly, UAE’s share of global tea imports rose from 8.3% to 9.4% during the same period.

"The UAE also re-exported USD6.2 million worth of coffee in 2011, an increase of 32% over 2010,” Matrade said.

In 2011, 85% of UAE’s re-exports of tea and coffee were to Iran and Oman, at 81% and 4% respectively.
