Matrade Plans 136 Trade Promotions Next Year To Bolster Exports

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 11 (Bernama) -- Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) has lined up 136 trade promotions next year to boost exports, Chief Executive Officer Dr Wong Lai Sum said today.

She said the promotions were drawn up after consulting the private sector amid a challenging global environment.

"This also includes programmes aimed at positioning Malaysia as a preferred sourcing hub," she told a press conference today.

Wong said one of the key initiatives to be undertaken to brand Malaysian products and services was through 58 iconic events to increase Malaysia's share in the international market.

She said 28 specialised marketing missions for targeted sectors would also be organised.

"Incoming buying missions will continue to be organised in conjunction with the Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS) and International Trade Malaysia (INTRADE) to draw international buyers to the country," she said.

Wong said eight Malaysia Services Exhibition to promote specific services in the regional markets would also be organised.

"This year, one of the new initiatives is promotion of cross-border investments through market entry missions overseas for market access to selected countries," she said, adding that this was following the transfer of the cross- border investment missions to Matrade from the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA).

Dr Wong said the weak global economy has dampened global trade performance and the impact on Malaysia's export performance was inevitable as exports growth has slowed down in recent months.

"Between January and October, trade growth was mostly supported by regional markets in Asia. Nevertheless, our total trade has surpassed the RM1 trillion mark, up four per cent from the same period last year," she said.

She said Matrade was confident that its 2013 work programme would serve as an effective action plan for Malaysian manufacturers and professional service providers to expand further into the international market and sustain exports next year.

"Active participation of Malaysian companies is critical to the success of the activities planned and I urge all exporters to register early for their participation in our programme for next year," she added.
