Digital Malaysia programme on track


KUALA LUMPUR: The Digital Malaysia programme is on track with the gradual implementation of its first eight projects with a cumulative targeted gross national income of RM270.75mil by end-2013.

In a statement yesterday, Multimedia Development Corp (MDeC) said the projects’ progress reported to the Digital Malaysia steering committee has also seen investment commitment of RM187.47mil from the private sector.

Among the eight projects which were the first wave of the Digital Malaysia programme were the Asian e-Fulfillment Hub and Enabling e-Payment Services for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and Micro Enterprises.

Digital Malaysia is the nation’s programme to advance the country towards a developed digital economy by 2020 by creating an ecosystem that promotes the pervasive use of information and communication technology (ICT) in all aspects of the society, government and economy. It aims to improve ICT contributions to the nation’s GNI to RM294bil or 17% – an increase from the current 9.8%.

It also aimed to create 160,000 high-value jobs and an additional RM7,000 digital income per annum for over 350,000 citizens by 2020.

To this effect, 25 Digital Malaysia projects will be implemented in stages.

The first wave of eight projects was rolled out in July this year, with the remaining 17 projects to be announced in stages from next year. – Bernama
