Pikom: It’s time to embrace mobile social commerce
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia should take the opportunity in the rapid growth of mobile social networking to further develop mobile social commerce, National ICT Association of Malaysia (Pikom) chairman Woon Tai Hai said.
Mobile social commerce is the convergence of mobile technology, Internet social networking and e-commerce.
“With the increase in mobile penetration and e-commerce reaching critical mass, the time has come to embrace mobile social commerce,” he said at the Pikom Leadership Summit 2012 here yesterday.
The summit was opened by Science, Technology and Innovation deputy minister Datuk Fadillah Yusof.
Woon said Malaysians spent about one-third of their time on social media sites compared with other online applications.
It was a natural progression of a maturing digital society to leverage on the power of social media using mobile devices for online transactions which translated to higher growth and propel the industry to new heights, he added.
Multimedia Development Corp chief executive officer Datuk Badlisham Ghazali said the country had more than 11 million users for Facebook website alone last year, constituting 39% of Malaysia’s population.
Meanwhile, the total e-commerce transactions for 2011 totalled RM1.97bil, of which RM467mil comprised mobile commerce transactions, he said.
The two-day summit was themed Innovation for Digital Opportunity - The Power of Mobile Social Commerce. The summit focuses on the mobile social commerce trends and its significance to business community especially the small and medium entreprises as an efficient platform to expand their market globally. – Bernama
