Malaysia contractors undertake RM90.5b jobs in 49 countries
KUALA TERENGGANU: A total of
115 contractors from Malaysia have undertaken 690 projects worth RM90.5 billion
in 49 countries from 2000 till this year.
From this, 616 projects worth RM57.7 billion have been successfully completed, while another 74 projects worth RM32.8 billion are under construction.
Records from the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) show that since the last 12 years, many foreign countries, especially from the Middle East, have chosen Malaysian construction companies to carry out their mega projects.
CIDB chief executive Datuk Seri Ir Dr Judin Abdul Karim said it was confident that with excellent track records, Malaysian construction companies would continue to be chosen by foreign countries to undertake their mega projects.

"CIDB has also undertaken various measures to enhance the
work quality of local construction firms so that they would continue to be
entrusted with many more mega projects in the developing countries.
"Among the measures include the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Malaysian and Asean nations for joint certification in the fields of engineering, architects and surveyors," he said after the launch of a seminar on the transformation of construction laws in Malaysia here on Monday.
The event was attended by 250 participants, including contractors, architects and staff from the local authorities in Terengganu.
Judin said work done by local contractors overseas covered various mega and high impact projects such as highways, light rail transit, airports and power stations.
Indeed, he said, a recent government delegation from Kazakhstan had indicated its interest to seek the assistance of Malaysian contractors to jointly develop building projects in its country.
Malaysian contractors should therefore take on these opportunities and show that they are capable of delivering work that is on par with that of international companies, he said.
Among Malaysian construction projects abroad include the steel structural works for the Burj Al Arab Hotel in Dubai, Formula One International Circuit in Bahrain, Khalifa Olympic Stadium, the international airport in Doha, the DukhanHighway in Qatar, the Mumbai-Pune expressway in India and Bank Sudan in Khartoum, Sudan.
