AIM unveils 58 business plans
PETALING JAYA: Agensi Inovasi Malaysia (AIM) has launched 58 new innovation business opportunities (IBOs) which have a potential to generate RM1.9bil in revenue.
“Our target is to get bids for at least half of these IBOs,” chief executive officer Mark Rozario told a media briefing.
He said 41 of the IBOs were from local public universities, six from public research institutes and 11 from private companies.
“I'm glad to see more private companies using the IBO platform to push their innovations to the market and I hope to see more in the future,” he added.
This is the fourth edition of the initiative since it was rolled out in April 2012.
The second batch of IBOs was introduced in October 2012 and the third in January this year.
A total of 142 IBOs had been launched since the first batch the latest roll-out raises the number to 200. IBOs are innovations by Malaysian researchers and inventors, universities and companies chosen by AIM based on their commercialisation potential.
AIM would then help match the intellectual property owners and investors through a series of due diligence.
Of the 142 business opportunities announced previously, 119 attracted bidders.
“Fourteen agreements were signed while 42 other are still under various stages of negotiation,” he said.
He said the latest deal sealed was a five-in-one paddy field preparation machine which the investor wanted to manufacture on a bigger scale.
Another notable IBO with great potential is the Ductacrete, a new type of concrete mixed with high quality rice husk ash that aims to achieve the ductility quality comparable to structural steel.
Rozario said most of the bidders for the IBOs were small and medium enterprises but some of them had also attracted interest from listed companies and foreign entities.
