Skali sees more firms embracing cloud computing

PETALING JAYA: Integrated e-Government and e-business firm Skali Group Malaysia expects 2013 to be a pivotal year for cloud computing as more organisations now realise the agility and lower operating costs that the service offers.

Last year, the firm’s revenue contribution from its cloud computing services went up 30% and it expects to record a further 30% growth this year.

Group chief executive Tengku Farith Rithauddeen said more businesses were beginning to embrace cloud computing as they were aware of the competitive advantage over on-premise applications.

Being the first public cloud provider in the region, Skali has extended its offering to private cloud as well to complement its existing public cloud offering.

“While the public cloud provides customers with the opportunity to share data virtually and reduce physical storage space, private cloud enables customers the ability to specify access limitations and the level of resource dedication to safeguard data privacy and security,” Farith said.

On expanding into foreign markets, Farith said Skali was working with an Indonesian enterprise to offer similar services to its customers in Indonesia and was already in the final stages of negotiations with a Thai-based company for their venture in Thailand.

“We will also be talking to other countries in the Asean region, especially Vietnam and Cambodia,” he added.

Skali is hosting all its customers’ servers at two Tier 3-data centres, equipped with high standard facilities environment, covering approximately 67,000 sq ft in Cyberjaya.

Amongst the clients using Skali’s cloud computing were those in the education industry, multinational companies, universities and government agencies.

Malaysia currently ranks 13th out of 24 economies worldwide in terms of cloud computing utilisation, mostly due the adoption of policies that are conducive to cloud innovation.
