MDeC urges businesses to adopt digital marketing
BUSINESSES in Malaysia should start adopting digital marketing mechanism in order to reach out to a larger and more segmented audience.
Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) vice-president Vijayratnam T. said business players who neglect the importance of digital marketing will lose out in today's era of digital economy.
"We are moving towards a digital economy at some level. Businesses today that neglect digital marketing will probably have a problem in a few years," he said in an interview, here, recently.
Vijayratnam said the Internet, being the tool of digital marketing, can help businesses reach out to the right group of people more effectively as opposed to traditional marketing tools, such as the newspaper and television.
"The Internet can target people based on behaviour, as opposed to before, where we had to rely on statistical data based on the readership of a publication, for example," he said.
Vijayratnam said though digital marketing is seen as more sophisticated than traditional marketing, the core value remains the same, which is understanding and fulfilling the customers' needs.
As a body that has been entrusted by the government to drive the country's digital economy, he said MDeC has identified three strategic thrusts that need to be carried out.
"The three thrusts are moving people from consumers to producers; supply to demand, or creating demand; and lastly, from low-knowledge advertisement to high-knowledge advertisement.
"In doing this, we are looking primarily at four communities and initiatives, namely youths, digital entrepreneurs, small and medium enterprises, and the bottom 40 that is the lower percentile of earners," Vijayratnam said.
To further promote digital marketing in Malaysia, he said MDeC has collaborated with the Association of Accredited Advertising Agents Malaysia, to organise a seminar on digital marketing.
The day-long seminar, themed Digital Malaysia - Future of Digital Marketing, was held on Tuesday at the Matrade Convention Centre in Kuala Lumpur. It was the first time such a seminar was held in Asia.
Vijayratnam said the seminar aimed to take digital marketing strategists on a fast-forward tour of the tactics and technologies that will change the way they engage with their audiences.
