Perodua drafting roadmap for used-car business
Second national car company Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua) is venturing into the used-car business to expand its revenue base

Kuala Lumpur: Second national car company Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua) hopes to establish an organisational structure for its used-car business by middle of the year,
its chief said.

The company is venturing into the used-car business to expand its revenue base and provide a platform for existing and new customers so that they can trade-in their Perodua cars or other
makes, for its new models.

Perodua first entered the used-car business in August 2008, but ceased operations more than a year later due to low sales volume.

“The market has been there but it is a matter of having the right people, system and processes.

That is what we are working on currently,” Perodua managing director Datuk Aminar Rashid Salleh said.

“We have a roadmap on how we want to make the business work. There may not be significant profits at first, but when the business picks up, we will have extra cash to help expand the company,” he told Business Times.

Aminar Rashid is excited about the venture as it will provide a new revenue stream for Perodua. Besides providing a platform to trade cars, hence boosting new vehicle sales, Perodua will sell the traded-in cars to second hand car dealers.

“Cars like the Kembara and Kancil have been on the road for more than a decade. By the end of this year, the owners will be able to trade in their cars for new models at our outlets.

“We are opening the first outlet in the Klang Valley by the third or fourth quarter of the year. We expect our sales for spare parts to increase in line with these new business venture,” he said.

Meanwhile, Aminar Rashid said Perodua’s participation in the upcoming Minggu Saham Amanah Malaysia (MSAM) will provide a significant boost to the company’s market share.

He said MSAM is a good avenue for Perodua to showcase its brand and models to the public. “It will also give confidence to those already investing in the portfolios under Permodalan
Nasional Bhd (PNB),” he said.

PNB holds a 10 per cent stake in Perodua, while a controlling 38 per cent is held by UMW Corp Sdn Bhd.
