Malaysians invited to participate in Sharjah halal food fair

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian companies are invited to participate in the Halal Food Fair Middle East in Sharjah, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), to tap into the growing Middle East and North African markets.

"Sharjah is considered as the gateway to the Middle East and North African region, apart from the Indian sub-continent and Central Asia, which have substantial Muslim population and are fast growing economies," Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) second vice chairman Saeed Obaid Al Jarwan said yesterday.

Though the Gulf Cooperation Council nations are among the world's richest in terms of oil reserves and per capita wealth, the region still imports 80 per cent of its food. According to reports, the annual food import for GCC is set to grow to US$53 billion (RM159 billion) from US$25.8 billion (RM77.4 billion) in 2010.

"There are plenty of opportunities available and we hope the Halal Food Fair Middle East will help Malaysian exporters find a foothold in the region," he said.

The Halal Food Middle East will be organised and hosted by Expo Centre Sharjah and SCCI and will be held on December 10-12 this year.

The exhibition aims to attract exporters, importers, traders, wholesellers, supermarkets, hypermarkets, retailers, food service outlets, agriculture players, halal certification bodies and trade promotion officers.

Trade between the GCC region and Malaysia reached US$11 billion (RM33 billion) in 2010. The UAE in particular recorded over US$6.5 billion (RM19.5 billion) of trade exchange with Malaysia during the period.

In 2010, exports from Malaysia to the UAE totalled US$3.4 billion (RM10.2 billion), while imports to Malaysia reached US$2.45 billion (RM7.35 billion).

Malaysia's main exports include electrical and electronic products, machinery, jewellery and palm oil while imports include crude petroleum and refined petroleum products and chemicals.
