Perodua on track to meet sales target

PERUSAHAAN Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua) is maintaining its 188,000 units sales target this year after sales climbed 17 per cent in the first half of 2012.

Managing director Datuk Aminar Rashid Salleh said the company sold 93,000 units in the first six months of this year compared with nearly 80,000 units in 2011.

"This represents 31 per cent of the estimated 303,100 total industry volume for the first half of 2012," he told reporters at a briefing here yesterday.

However, he stressed that the sales numbers in 2011 are not a true comparison as the entire automotive industry was impacted by the lack of parts from Japan due to the disasters that hit the country in March last year.

In June this year, sales jumped a whopping 84.3 per cent to 16,400 units from 8,900 units in the same month last year as vehicle stocks in June 2011 were badly depleted due to parts shortage from Japan.

However, sales rose marginally by 0.6 per cent from 16,300 units in June 2010 as Perodua works to address the impact of the lending guidelines
.

"That being said, we are confident that we are able to meet our sales target of 188,000 units this year," Aminar said.

He noted that since the new guidelines were introduced, the number of rejection increased to 27 per cent in January 2012 compared with only 20 per cent in December 2011.

However, the rejection rate for June has eased to 24 per cent.

Aminar said that Perodua plans to double its exports sales to 20,000 by 2015 from 10,000 estimated this year.

In the first six months of this year, Perodua exported 5,134 units compared with 2,195 units in the same period last year.

During the period, exports to Indonesia soared by 776 per cent to 2,383 units due to the introduction of the Sirion (also known as Myvi here) in July last year.

Aminar acknowledged that Perodua's exports are still making losses on a per unit basis but he said it is improving.

At the same event, Perodua launched the New Alza Advanced Version, which will replace the Alza Advanced Version as part of Perodua's strategy to increase its holding on MPV market.

It plans to sell between 350 and 400 units a month of the new variant that comes with a built-in touch screen multimedia system with navigation as well as TM WiFi hotspot locator
